PEPPER PRICES STEADY TO
FIRM AT ALL ORIGINS BUT BUYERS HOPING FOR
AVAILABILITY AS AND WHEN NEEDED

In the international pepper market everybody seems to be on a wait
and watch mode.
In Lampung, the harvest has begun with
estimated lower output from last year.
Similarly, the coming crop in Brazil is also said to be lower this
year The growers were said
to be not willing to sell at lower levels as the cost of production
has been significantly high in recent years. The price of late is
being determined by the dollar rate which has been fluctuating

Pepper ends the
day shade weaker than yday on speculation. Future deliveries end the
day lower by less than 1 %. Some interest seen today at lower prices
as buyers sought to cover some quantities from investors and
upcountry sellers on an otherwise dull say at the spot markets.

BLACK PEPPER: The
market continued to be mixed. In Vietnam, trading was slower and
prices were stable locally, while fob prices eased marginally. Stock
is estimated to have limited, as major portion of this year crop has
been shipped. At HCMC, local prices stood at the level of VND 35,750
per kg. In dollar terms however, the prices eased marginally due to
weakening Dong against US dollar. In India, the market slowed down
and prices eased.
BRAZIL:
During 2008, Brazil exported 36,585 mt of pepper (34,363 mt of
whole pepper and 2,222 mt of ground pepper) worth USD 109.51
million against 38,670 mt valued at USD 117.20 million, showing a
decrease of 2,643 mt or 5%. During 2008, Brazil exported pepper to
more than 30 countries. The United States, the main destination
absorbed 8,980 mt or 26% of Brazil’s pepper export in 2008 which
declined from 13,622 mt (37%) in 2007. Other important
destinations were Germany, Spain and Mexico imported 6,108 mt
(18%), 3,008 mt (9%) and 2,588 mt (8%) respectively. In terms of
unit value, Brazil received US$ 2,993 per mt in 2008 against US$
3,031 per ton previous year.
IMPORTS INTO USA
The United States imported 64,798 mt of pepper in
2008, comprising 49,626 mt of black, 6,960 mt of white and 8,204 mt
of ground pepper. Compared to import of 63,940 mt in 2007, there was
a marginal increase of 1%. Import of black pepper decreased by 3%,
while import of white and ground pepper, increased by 25% and 11%. .
Indonesia, India, Vietnam and Brazil were the main sources of 96%
black pepper imported directly into the United States. Import of
white pepper originated mostly from Indonesia (69%), while imports
of ground pepper were mostly from India and Vietnam. Overall,
Indonesia was a single country supplied 40% of pepper into the
United States. Vietnam and India supplied 21% each and Brazil 13%.

EXPORTS 2008
Germany imported 2,159 mt of pepper
(1,819 mt of whole pepper and 340 mt of ground pepper) during
August 2008 valued at Euro 5.5 millions, against 2,779 mt in
August 2007. During January – August 2008, Germany has imported
18,930 mt (16,977 mt of whole pepper and 1,952 mt of ground pepper),
showing a significant fall of 3,593 mt or 16%, compared to imports
of 22,523 mt (20,670 mt of whole and 1,852 mt of ground pepper)
during the same period last year. Import of whole pepper declined
by 18%, while import of ground pepper increased by 5%. Vietnam and
Brazil were the main source of whole pepper for Germany followed
by Indonesia and India. Ground pepper was mainly supplied by
Brazil and India
During 2008 Indonesia exported
52,408 mt of pepper worth USD 185.7 million, comprising 36,219 mt
of black and 16,189 mt of white pepper. Compared to export of
38,447 mt in 2007, there was a significant increase of 36%, mainly
black pepper. The significant increase in export, however, not
reflected an increase in production, since the exports were mostly
shipped in the first semester, sourced from previous year’s carry
over. Whiles production in 2008 was reported lower from 2007.
Export of black pepper increased substantially by 58%, and only 4%
for white pepper. During 2008, Indonesia exported pepper to around
40 countries. Major share of Indonesian pepper was shipped to the
United States absorbing 60% of black and 25% of white pepper.
Around 14% of black pepper was shipped to India and 9% to Vietnam.
Singapore, Germany and the Netherlands were also main destination
for Indonesian white pepper absorbing 18%, 13% and 11%
