Weekly Highlights
2010-02-03

BLACK PEPPER
The Dollar rate In Brazil rose continuously throughout January, amounting to almost 8%. On that basis, pepper exporters have again
started to offer and fob prices have dropped.
However, in February the currency trend inverted and there is a possibility that pepper prices will stabilize or even rise slightly, always depending on Vietnam.
February is usually a dull month for trade as there are many distractions: Lunar New Year, Carnival, The Spices Congress in India and the Gulf Food exhibition in Dubai, so normal activity might only be resumed in March, when the Vietnamese crop is usually in full swing.

ALLSPICE PIMENTO
Unexpected strong rise in Mexican Allspice Pimento due to very low local stocks. Market very volatile and prices rising on daily basis.

Today from Cochin- February 05
Pepper tumbles on bull liquidation at the back of a slower Indian domestic market as demand slows down with more availability. Bad news from the stocks and global cues helping the bears push down prices. Futures slide on offloading by bulls ahead of Feb expiry which is supposed to be quite big this time.
Futures deliveries lower by more than 3 % than yday and are trading at the lowest point since about 6 months or so.

(6%) respectively. In terms of unit value, Brazil
received USD 2,562 per mt in 2009 against USD

IMPORT INTO USA:

In May 2009, the United States imported 5,315 mt of pepper (4,364 mt of black, 320 mt of white and 630 mt of ground pepper). The import showed an increase compared to imports in previous months, mainly due to significant increase in import of black pepper from Indonesia. The import however, was slightly lower from 5,433 mt in May 2008. During January – May 2009, USA has imported 23,881 mt (18,179 mt of black, 2,073 mt of white and 3,229 mts of ground pepper), showing a decrease of 11%, compared to imports of 26,993 mt in the same period last year. Whole black and white pepper decreased by 11% and 36% respectively, while ground pepper increased by 14%. Indonesia and Brazil followed by Vietnam and India were the main sources for black pepper. White pepper sourced from Indonesia and Vietnam, while ground pepper was from India and Vietnam.
IMPORT INTO GERMANY - IPC IPC - INDONESIAN EXPORTS  2008
Germany imported 2,159 mt of pepper (1,819 mt of whole pepper and 340 mt of ground pepper) during August 2008 valued at Euro 5.5 millions, against 2,779 mt in August 2007. During 2008 Indonesia exported 52,408 mt of pepper worth USD 185.7 million, comprising 36,219 mt of black and 16,189 mt of white pepper. Compared to export of 38,447 mt in 2007, there was a significant increase of 36%, mainly black pepper. The significant increase in export, however, not reflected an increase in production, since the exports were mostly shipped in the first semester, sourced from previous year’s carry over. Whiles production in 2008 was reported lower from 2007. Export of black pepper increased substantially by 58%, and only 4% for white pepper. During 2008, Indonesia exported pepper to around 40 countries. Major share of Indonesian pepper was shipped to the United States absorbing 60% of black and 25% of white pepper. Around 14% of black pepper was shipped to India and 9% to Vietnam. Singapore, Germany and the Netherlands were also main destination for Indonesian white pepper absorbing 18%, 13% and 11%
