WPB Week #18/08, 28 Apr– 02 May 2008
BLACK PEPPER: Vietnam as the main producers and exporters
is at the end of its harvesting season and has now
become the main factor driving market direction. Lower
prices in Vietnam have dampened the traders’ sentiments.
In Vietnam, trading was limited due to lack of overseas
demand in addition to producer’s attitude of holding stocks.
They only released materials when prices met their
expectations. Labour Day holiday during the week also slowed
down market activity. At Daklak, prices for raw material
stood at around VND 48,500 per kg.
In India, futures market showed a positive direction due
to the increased demand at lower rate. There were some
activities at the Commodity Exchange, but prices declined
by around 1-3% from last week. In Lampung, prices were
reported to remain stable.
In Sarawak, local prices
increased by MYR 350 per mt from MYR 9,350 to MYR 9,700 at
the week’s close, while FOB prices were stable at USD
4,400 per mt. Compared to last week, local prices increased
by 2%, while FOB prices decreased by 2%.
In Sri Lanka, average pepper price at growing areas increased
marginally by 1%.
