Preliminary data indicates that Vietnam exported a record 98,494 tons of pepper in 2004, an increase of almost 32% over the 74,635 tons exported in 2003.
Although it is possible that the exports in 2004 include a quantity of pepper carried over from the previous year, there is no doubt that these exports reflect the significant increase in production in Vietnam. Since 2002, Vietnam has been the world’s largest exporter of pepper and is likely to maintain this position for the near future.

In value terms, it is reported that total export earnings from pepper were 26% higher in 2004, at US $ 133.7 million, compared to US $ 106 million in 2003. Average value declined, however, from US $ 1,420 per ton in 2003, to US $ 1,360 per ton in 2004.
Vietnam has indicated that it is committed to improving the quality of pepper exported and to increasing productivity, while holding the planted area constant.

For 2005, the target is to ensure that 40 percent of total exports will comprise high-quality products. The Vietnamese Pepper Association (VPA) is encouraging its members to meet market requirements by further investing in appropriate processing equipment.

In recent years, the Association has been active in organising trade delegations to consuming countries in Europe and Middle East, among others, in its efforts to boost exports to these destinations.

Vietnam Produces 50% of World's Pepper Output

Vietnam has become the world's largest pepper exporter, accounting for 50% of commercial pepper output in the world, ranking ahead of India and Indonesia, according to Vietnam Pepper Association (VPA) at a meeting for the 2005-07 term on January 24.

Far exceeding runner-ups India and Indonesia, Vietnam shipped around 110,000 tons of the products at $150 million last year, representing an increase of 48.5% and 42.6% on-year, respectively, said Do Ha Nam, acting chairman of the VPA at the meeting.

Meanwhile, other big exporters in the world witnessed decreases in their export amounts. India sold only 55,000 tons abroad, Indonesia sold 53,000 tons and Malaysia sold 25,000 tons in 2004.

From 1998 to 2003, Vietnam's pepper industry had an annual growth of 64% in its total output and 56.5% in its export amount.
The price of Vietnamese black pepper also slightly rose to $1,200 per ton now from $1,160 in late 2004, Nam said.

The success in pepper export growth was attributed to the country's harvesting time of four to five months earlier than other countries, said Tran Duc Tung, an official in the Planning Department of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

The VPA will strive to become a member of the International Pepper Community (IPC) this year and establish trademarks for Chu Se pepper in central highlands Gia Lai province and Phu Quoc pepper in southern Kien Giang province.

Vietnam in 2004 cultivated around 51,300 hectares of pepper trees, up by 8,000 hectares against 2003, yielding 100,000 tons of pepper products.

The price of pepper in the world export market is likely to continue to drop in 2005 due to world overproduction, says acting president Do Ha Nam at the Vietnam Pepper Association (VPA).

The Vietnamese pepper industry is shifting investments to increase productivity and quality, rather than expanding the growing area.
In 2004, Vietnamese pepper productivity rose to an average of 2.4-2.5 tonnes per hectare, and even to four tonnes per hectare in some areas in Gia Lai province.

Despite the decline in the export price of pepper in 2004, export revenue soared to more than US$150 million, up by US$47 million, partially due to the amount of clean peppers increasing to more than 37 percent of total pepper exports.

Dados preliminares indicam que Vietnam exportou um recorde de 98,494 toneladas de pimenta do reino em 2004, um aumento de quase 32% sobre o total de 74,635 toneladas exportadas em 2003. Embora seja possivel que os números incluam uma quantidade de pimenta restante da safra anterior, não há duvida que estas exportações refletem um aumento significativo na produção de Vietnam. Desde 2002 o Vietnam tem sido o maior exportador mundial de pimenta e deverá manter esta posição por algum tempo.

Em termos de valor reporta-se um incremento de 26% num total de U$ 133.7 milhões, comparado com U$ 106 milhões faturados em 2003. Entretanto o preço médio da pimenta sofreu uma redução de U$ 1,420 por tonelada em 2003 para U$ 1,360 por tonelada em 2004. Vietnam tem indicado que está comprometido a melhorar a qualidade da pimenta exportada e aumentar a produtividade, mantendo a área plantada constante. O objetivo para 2005 é assegurar que pelo menos 40% do total exportado seja composto por produto alta qualidade. A VPA - Associação Pimenteira do Vietnam está incentivando seus membros a investir em equipamentos e tecnologia para estar dentro das exigencias do mercado sofisticado.

Nos últimos anos a Associação tem organizado seminarios e missões comerciaispara os países consumidores na Europa e Medio Oriente entre outros em seu esforço concentrado de incrementar vendas para estes destinos.
